  • Mud crabs are prized by recreational fishers for their impressive size and delicious taste. Their powerful claws can be dangerous and mud crabs need to be handled with care.

  • They use these claws to open mussels and other shellfish, so they have to be strong.

  • A mud crab’s claw will remain in a vice-like grip even if it is separated from the crab so watch your fingers and toes!
  • The Mud Crab is found in the tidal saltwater mangroves of northern Australia. ITs huge claws are strong and intimidating and if the Mud Crab feels threatened they are put straight up for defence and will lock on to the intruder.

Aboriginal people and their families would hunt in the shallow waters, spearing Mud Crab and fish while also collecting mussel shells for food.
